Understand How To Pray – Part 1 of 2

Being in the Ministry for a few years, I have noticed a

The issue that most Christians seem to have trouble with is understanding prayer.

I can’t count how many times people talk as if prayer is a strange thing, or the number of prayers will equal success with getting God to move on their behalf. I too have struggled with this problem for many years. I used to think that prayer was a form of special God-given talent; Also, I was trying to find someone who thought they could really pray, to pray for me, as if their big prayers could help me in my problems. I remember seeing a billboard in a church that said “praying with many tears can move mountains with God.” As I read this sign, the Spirit of God moved over me and said, “The prayer of tears will not move me, only prayers based on the word of God.”

With God’s words floating in my heart, I began to think about that statement: “Only prayers that are based on God’s word will make God move.” I have always tried to base my prayers on what the Bible says, but with little or no actual action from God. So what are prayers based on the word of God? Well, that is what we are going to explore in this newsletter. We will begin the Sentence Comprehension process.

The first thing I would recommend is that you forget everything you know about prayer and, with this study, begin and rebuild your thinking and understanding of prayer. Now some might say, Brother Daryl, that is a great statement, and I would reply “Yes it is”, however I am almost certain that you, like me, learned prayer in a religious way, and not what the Bible says it is prayer. .

Now, there are numerous types of prayer, and I will not go into the different sentences. I want to show you what prayer is and how you can start to use prayer effectively.

Prayers based on the word of God are not easy prayers. If you are going to base your prayer on the word of God, then you will have to know the word of God. Let’s look at

Joshua 1: 5-9

No one can be in front of you in all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, I will be with you; I will not leave you or forsake you. [6]”Be strong and courageous, because you will give this people possession of the land that I swore to their fathers that I would give them. [7]”Just be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law that my servant Moses commanded you; do not deviate from it either to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful wherever you go. [8] “This book of the law will not leave your mouth, but you will meditate on it day and night, so that you take care to do everything that is written in it; because then

prosper your way and you will succeed. [9] “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be discouraged, for the Lord! Your God is with you wherever you go.”

Notice, in the previous writing; God told him not to let him

book or the words of the law depart from his mouth. Why is that? Well, God has put his will for us in the word of God, and we must know the word of God to understand what the will of God is for our life.

2 Tim. 2:15

“Be diligent in presenting yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, who accurately handles the word of truth.”

Have you ever wondered why you should handle God’s word so carefully? It’s not that you should quote Scripture to people, or be able to discuss Scripture at any time. Must it be one of the reasons why God puts so much infinity in God’s word?

Psalm 119: 76

“Oh, that your mercy comfort me, according to the word that you have given to your servant.”

This scripture shows a key for the reason why we must study the

Word of God and keep it before us every day. God’s world is our guide to what God wants in our life. Remember, in 1 Joshua 1: 8 it says, “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will prosper your way and you will be successful “. Now for when will you prosper your way. Unfortunately, there is a connection between what we speak and the word of God. We can see this even more clearly in some New Testament teachings.

Mark 11:24

“That is why I tell you that all the things that you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them and that they will be granted.”

Here is another key to understanding prayer, Jesus says that whatever we ask in prayer, believe that we have received it. Jesus is giving us the definition of faith.

Hebrews 11: 1-2

“Now, faith is the certainty of what is expected, the conviction of what is not seen. [2] Because by her the men of yore obtained approval. “

In its basic form, prayer must be firm and rooted in faith. So one may wonder, brother Daryl, if it must be firm and rooted in faith, why do you tell me that it must be based on the word of God? Here’s why. It must be firm, to be able to believe what you ask. If you don’t really believe that you are going to receive, then you will not hold onto your prayer.

James 1: 6-8

“But you must ask with faith without doubting, because the one who doubts is like the waves of the sea, pushed and shaken by the wind. [7] Because that man should not expect to receive anything from the Lord, [8] being a double minded man, unstable in all his ways. “

And how can it be rooted in faith without the word of God?

Hebrews 11: 6

“And without faith it is impossible to please him, because whoever approaches God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.”

Hebrews tells us that it is impossible to please God without faith, and if we are to draw near to God we must believe that he rewards those who seek him. This cannot be much easier. We need faith for our prayers to be answered. So how do we get this faith?

Hebrews 12: 2

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, who for the joy set before him suffered the cross, despising shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

We must first understand that Jesus is the author and finisher of

our faith. This means that we have the same faith that Jesus has. He was the creator of your faith and had perfected it. So why can’t we get any of our prayers answered? We are simply not applying our faith to the will of God. For the most part, most of us don’t really know what God’s will is for us, so how can we pray? Therein lies the problem, when we pray “Father, if they will”, this is really an excuse, it is a lazy prayer. If we are going to get results in our life, we will have to know God’s will for our life, and there is only one way to do it, by faith. How is faith built?

Romans 10:17

“So faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of Christ.”

We can see that it is by reading God’s word, our Bible, that we can make our faith work to its fullest potential. See that Jesus created faith, and God’s word will perfect it. We need to try to trick God into answering our prayers. What we have to do is begin to understand how to pray. Think of the sentence as a baseball player. Does he hit to strike out? No, he wants to hit a home run every time he hits. And that’s how we should be, prayer is hard work and it’s like home work when you’re at school. You will take out of the sentence what you put in it.

In conclusion, it is by knowing the word of God and keeping the word in our mouth that we can begin to produce the faith that will please God and get him to move on our part. It’s not about how much you pray, or how many times a day you pray, it’s really what you are saying that will make a difference in your prayer life. Base your prayers on God’s word and you will see God move in your life.

In Part 2 of Prayer Comprehension, I will show you how to pray effectively. I will show you how to apply this lesson, as well as Part 2, and you will have the proper foundation to be a master in the art of prayer.
