This Means War Movie Review

Every once in a while, there’s a romantic comedy that’s deep, thought-provoking, and moving. Just keep in mind that ‘This Means War’ isn’t one of those. However, if you’re looking for action scenes, humor, and sexy British accents, this movie has your name written all over it.

THE GOOD: The opening scene of this film draws a lot of attention, with Chris Pine (FDR) and Tom Hardy (Tuck) playing CIA agents who smoothly walk into a party that appears to be hosted by Ashton Kutcher, flirt with some women, and then start shooting the bad guys. We soon learn that they have aroused the ire of German supervillain Heinrich (played by Til Schweiger) and that becomes the film’s subplot. However, the main entertainment value lies in the fact that FDR and Tuck have fallen in love with the same woman: Lauren (played by the lovable Reese Witherspoon). Being the best friends that they are, they agree to follow a set of gentlemen’s rules and let Lauren decide which one of them she prefers… but we all know that men just aren’t that mature, so she’s not at all surprised. that the two use every possible covert tactic to sabotage each other’s plans to woo the beautiful lady. It was genuinely funny, and frankly, I don’t laugh easily. You have to earn it from me and they certainly did. Reese is her usual delightfully cute persona, and you can certainly see why she has trouble deciding which of these two charmers to choose. Personally, when British accents are involved, it’s a no-brainer to me…always go with the British. Tom Hardy could be the spitting image of the elephant man, and I’d still swoon at that voice and hear him utter the word “privacy.” PRIV-ah-cee. Sign.

THE BAD: While I’m aware that this movie isn’t getting much praise from critics overall, it seems to me that the flaw lies in people’s assumptions that all movies should be Oscar-worthy, life-changing moments. in the time. No, this movie probably won’t win any awards, and I won’t go so far as to say it changed my life. But it made me laugh, several times in the space of 90 minutes, and it entertained me, which is the point of going to the movies in the first place. Sometimes that’s perfectly good enough. Add some buttered popcorn and a diet coke and I’m happy. If I can point to anything in this movie that was less than desirable, it would be the fact that, for a PG-13 rating, the sex scenes seemed —too loaded. Speaking as a mother of two teenage sons, with a third not far behind, I would NOT agree with them seeing a kitchen counter used in such a way. Call me a prude if you have to, but it’s my review, so call it what I see it.

THE UGLY: Throughout the movie, Lauren’s friend Trish (played by Chelsea Handler) is there to give all sorts of raunchy and tomboyish advice. It’s basically a train wreck and adds another dimension to the argument that this movie is definitely not for young teens. I read somewhere that they actually had to remove several of Trish’s lines just to keep the movie from being rated R. Her wise words don’t add anything to the story except to give you the impression that she’s a bitch. She had a redeeming phrase that was “Don’t go for the best guy, go for the guy who makes you better.” I wish all her lines had been so attractive.

This movie has a “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” feel to it, which isn’t surprising since it’s from the same writer, so if you enjoyed it, it’s probably a hit for you too. Not as smart and fast-paced, but then again, Brad Pitt doesn’t have a British accent, so it’s kind of a tie.

The Trophy Wife gives this movie 4 trophies.

‘This Means War’ is 97 minutes long and is rated PG-13 for sexual content including references, some violence and action, and for language (the F-word is used once).
