Pawprint Design Services Case Study: Interior Design for a Four-Legged Home

The family includes; 1 big dog, 1 bossy cat, a 10 year old boy and his two animal loving parents!

They moved into the 30-year-old home knowing it would need an update. As part of the interior design planning process, they took the time to think about how the home could be optimized to minimize the potential damage their pets (and children) could cause, while still meeting the needs of all members of the family. the family.

The house needed new flooring and new paint throughout.

Outdated vinyl in kitchen and rear baths area, worn and dirty berber carpet left living room and master bedrooms, all rooms repainted.

The chosen pavement was a Wilsonart wood laminate. Wood laminate made sense for several reasons;

-color chosen to coordinate with the coat color of dogs and cats

-Laminated wood resistant to wear and easy maintenance.

Will not scratch (pet claws), does not need to be resealed, is easy to vacuum/mop and wet mop so everyday and extra pet stains are never a concern.

The paint finish on the wall had been matte, Navajo White.

-New paint colors chosen through a Low gloss paint finish that is washable. Now when the big dog snuggles up against the wall, or the cat’s scent marks a corner of the wall, it easily washes off without fear or stripping the paint.

Windows and sleeping arrangements.

The cat wanted higher vantage points and sunny windows or doors to look into. The dog wanted a good view of the street in front of the house. They both needed comfortable den-like beds to relax in, which were placed in the rooms where the rest of the 2-legged family members spend most of their time.

The vertical blinds on the front windows have been removed and replaced with bamboo blinds. In the dining room, the bamboo shade remains raised halfway so dog can look out into the front yard and street without damaging the window treatment.

The sliding glass doors in the family room that open to the backyard have only one window valence so the cat and dog can enjoy natural sunlight and have an unobstructed view.

The family room has a side-by-side dog and cat bed against the beehive fireplace (think den like nature) The materials are washable and hide pet fur well.

There is a chenille bedspread on the back of the sofa that exactly matches the cat’s fur. The cat likes to ‘nest’ in the soft blanket and the owner simply needs to throw it in the washing machine for cleaning.

The dog sleeps with her pet parents in the master bedroom on her. dog bed covered with Cryptonite fabric. Cryptonite is stain and odor resistant, antimicrobial, and washes easily.
