Monocular Cleaning Tips

A monocular is similar to a binocular. Monoculars are basically small, lightweight mini telescopes. Many binocular owners these days prefer to have a monocular as its functions are very similar to that of a binocular and these are easy to carry due to their light weight. These devices are great for bird watching, hunting, sports viewing, and general viewing when outdoors. Therefore, monoculars are important devices that you need to take good care of. Here are some easy-to-follow monocular cleaning tips.

There should be enough space to clean

Although a monocular is not a large device, it should have a clean place to start cleaning. If the place you choose for cleaning is dirty and grimy, there is always the possibility of more dust getting inside. Before you start cleaning, make sure you have some paper towels and a soft cloth handy. Soft brushes and cleaning solutions are also helpful.

Choose the right cleaning solutions

Don’t make the mistake of using only water to clean dirt and grime. Using soaps and other cleaning agents could leave abrasions and even mean that some of it has gotten inside the device. The best way to clean it is to use a solvent-free cleaning solution, found at major binocular stores. Use an extremely soft brush to clean around the corners and also to make sure not even the slightest mark is left on the surface of the lens.

When to clean?

Cleaning a monocular should be done at regular intervals, for example once every two months and not once every six months. If you use it quite frequently, you should clean it after you are done using it, and then put it in the case. If you have any difficulty cleaning certain parts of the device, it would be a good idea to take it to a binocular shop and have them do the cleaning for you. Binocular stores tend to have special cleaning solutions that would result in better cleaning.

What should you avoid doing?

The worst thing you can do to your monocular is leave it in direct sunlight. Even if you’re hiking or camping, take the case with you so that as soon as you’re done using it, you can immediately place your device inside the case. Even when you have finished cleaning the monocular, keep it out of direct sunlight.

All that being said, you should make sure to clean your monocular at regular intervals to ensure that it serves you well and for a long time.
