NPs must complete at least 100 CEs each five years. Those who are not practicing in the state may also recertify by taking a certification exam and earning 150 CEs. The state board of nursing uses national certification verification for NPs, and it depends heavily on these organizations to verify that an NP has the right credentials to practice.

CEU courses are available online and in classrooms. Nurses can take self-paced packets, attend webinars, or conference workshops. They may also study professional literature on their own. A CEU course is valid only if the nurse has passed a test in the content area that they are studying. If you’ve taken a CEU course online, remember that it counts as 10 contact hours.
