The number one method to help potty train your Yorkie is to try using the crate training method. I’ll walk you through an overview of the steps to crate train your dog.

Step 1: Buy a dog cage. Make sure you buy one that allows room for growth. You won’t need an oversized crate for a Yorkie!

Step 2: Lay out bedding that makes the dog or puppy comfortable and comfortable. Remember, we want this cage to be the dog’s hideaway and relaxation spot.

Step 3: To entice the dog into the crate, place a treat in the middle of the bedding and give your dog lots of love when he goes inside to get it. While the dog is still inside, say the word “box” several times. Your friend will quickly learn when he hears the word “box” to enter.

Step 4: Once the dog has eaten and drunk some food and water, let him out of the crate and immediately take him outside. If he goes to the bathroom, immediately reward him with praise. (Make sure you take your dog to the same bathroom area. This will become a familiar smelling area for him in no time and they’ll know what they’re supposed to do there.)

Step 5: Be careful when the dog is in the crate overnight. You don’t want to teach your Yorkie that it’s okay to wake you up at all hours of the night.
