Whereabouts of the Gaddafi family

Colonel Gaddafi has eight biological children (7 boys and one daughter) from two marriages and has adopted 2 more. While Tripoli is under siege, no one knows the exact location of Gaddafi and his family members.

Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi is now 69 years old. Behind him, he has nearly 42 years of authoritarian rule over his homeland, Libya. It is not known if he is in Tripoli or even in the country, but his forces now have very limited power.

His eldest son, from his brief first marriage, is Muhammad Gaddafi. He was never interested in succeeding his father and instead heads Libya’s Olympic committee and mobile phone and internet provider. His case is quite curious, because after surrendering to the rebels on Sunday, he escaped from there with the help of forces loyal to Gaddafi.

Gaddafi’s superstar son, Saif al-Islam, is his second son and was presumably captured by the rebels on Sunday, which was confirmed by the ICC (international criminal court). Surprisingly, early Tuesday, he arrived in a white limousine at Tripoli’s Rixos hotel and showed foreign journalists parts of Tripoli apparently under regime control. When asked about the warrant for his arrest and the charges of crimes against humanity against him, he replied, “To hell with the ICC.” Saif al-Islam believes that forces loyal to Gaddafi will “break the backbone” of the rebels, an obviously unrealistic statement similar to the attitude of the Nazis during the siege of Berlin.

Muammar’s other son, Saadi (36), has had a football and business career. He first played for the Tripoli Alahly team and then for a short time in Italian football, joining Perugia, Udinese and Sampdoria. He played just two games over four seasons and suspicions were raised that the two sides paid richly to add him. In March, he allegedly ordered soldiers to shoot unarmed peaceful protesters in Benghazi. He fled with his brother Saif and his whereabouts are currently unknown.

Mutassim Gaddafi, the colonel’s son, was officially the country’s national security adviser. He held talks with Hillary Clinton in April 2009. There is no information on his location at this time.

Hannibal Gaddafi is best known for his arrest with his wife in Geneva in 2008 for an alleged beating of their servants. Now 35, he is a trained sailor who went into the shipping business. His whereabouts are unknown.

There is a mystery surrounding the youngest biological son of Colonel Khamis Gaddafi. While rebel forces claim he was killed, he is likely still alive in an unknown location. Being the member of the Gaddafi family closest to the armed forces, he commanded the army’s elite 32nd Reinforced Brigade that bears his name.

Gaddafi’s only son reported dead is Saif al-Arab Gaddafi. He was killed during the NATO campaign on April 30. He was a student in Munich when the uprising broke out and he was ordered to return to Libya. It turned out that he was known to German law enforcement for arms smuggling and for ordering an acid attack on a nightclub bouncer.
