West Bengal is the home of many social reformers like Rabindranath Tagore, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda, Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and many more. During the independence of India, Bengal was divided into two parts, East Bengal and West Bengal. East Bengal was initially merged with Pakistan until 1971. After 1971, East Bengal gained freedom and formed a republican country called Bangladesh. The state remained in India as an extreme part. It is bordered by Bangladesh to the east, Jharkhand to the west, Bhutan and Sikkim to the north. The south borders the Bay of Bengal.

West Bengal has a tropical climate, almost 9 months of summer and 3 months of winter. But in the mountainous region of the northeast, the climate is cold all year round. The humidity is high enough as compared to other states in India. There are six seasons. But only 4 can be observed externally. These seasons are summer, rainy season, early fall, and winter. During the summer, the average temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and in some Zillas like Bankura, Purulia, the temperature rises higher than that and most of the time it reaches the 45 degree mark. But during the summer, “kal-Baisakhi” or “northwest” offers some relief. It is a kind of electrical storm that forms due to low atmospheric pressure. These storms are very devastating and cause a lot of damage during the summer during June and July. But in the northeast corner of Darjeeling the weather is beautiful. In winter, thick fog causes serious damage in these regions.
