Building a sense of community through your hobby

Unfortunately, most communities in our country need some sense of what community means. Everyone gets so involved in their own life and the things on their to-do list that they forget about the community they live for. Giving back to the community is not as popular as it used to be and it’s pretty sad. We all live in communities that could probably use our help, and without that community we wouldn’t have many of the programs we’re happy to be involved with.

The parades, groups and seasonal activities that many of us participate in are only possible because of the community we live for. It’s easy to forget that, but sometimes giving just a little can mean a lot. There are children to mentor, tasks to perform, and talents to share. Many programs or activities are run strictly on a voluntary basis and without people to help them die out. Just as the idea of being good neighbors disappeared, so did the sense of community.

It used to be that people would sit on their front porches, meet their neighbors, and participate in and even lead activities and groups in the community. He might want to do it, but he’s not sure how to start. Consider teaching a class or facilitating an activity where you are an expert or know a thing or two.

If you are a model ship builder, this hobby can easily become an activity to share with the community you are a part of. Inevitably, there are groups in your community that cater to children, so share your talent and hobby with that group. Even considering teaching a class can be a constructive and rewarding way to give back.

You may not believe it, but it is true that every little bit counts. If you have a hobby, like building model boats, that you’re a part of, even having or being a part of a show can make a difference in someone’s life. Maybe there is someone out there who always wanted to get into the hobby but didn’t know how. Perhaps there is a child who needs a positive outlet for their stressful situation. Maybe it’s someone who needs some company or something positive to spend his time and energy; could offer the right outlet for any of these people. So if you’re looking for a way to give back to your community, consider sharing your model ship building skills.
