4 questions to ask yourself before buying a puppy

If you’re thinking of buying a puppy, there are some very important things to consider before proceeding. If you can’t answer yes to the following questions, you should think again about whether a dog is the right kind of pet for you.

1. Can I really afford a dog? In addition to buying a puppy and feeding it, you have to take into account the cost of possible veterinary fees.

2. Do I have the time or inclination to exercise a dog every day?

3. Can I give a puppy the care and attention it will need for the rest of its life? Dogs can live up to 20 years. That will require a very big commitment on your part.

4. Will someone be home most of the day to keep the dog company? Dogs are social animals and do not like to be left alone for long periods of time.

If you still intend to go ahead, the next thing to consider is what type of dog is right for you. There are more than two hundred different races and each one has its own characteristics. Somewhere out there will be the right kind of dog for you.

Perhaps the best way to choose which breed is best for you is to consider your own personality and habits. Are you energetic and lively? Or do you like to take things slow? Are you strong and can you handle a larger type of dog? Do you like to socialize and meet new people? Never buy a puppy just for the looks of him. If you are interested in a particular breed, always ask the breeder what the typical personality traits will be when the puppy is fully grown.
